I was going to suggest Odin at least try to offer something, like making them all immortal undead like Coal, but then I remembered… Why not just use Bifrost or such?
Heck in at least one story in the Poetic Edda, Thor tries to cross a river to get to Asgard after being out on a trip (and gets told off by the ferryman, but still), albeit I think most adaptations don’t include that route.
Now I have to wonder what Odin’s hurry is. Is he merely impatient? Does he expect Ragnarök to happen within the span of one human lifetime? Or the true crack theory… is he gearing up to begin the fight on his own terms?
Back on page 21 of the first chapter, Odin says they will need the pieces “in the time to come” and Coal tries to ask if he means Ragnarök, so it does sound like it’s probably not far off.
‘He finally said it.” Do you mean Coal finally said he loved them? Or that Odin finally spelled out that he must kill them?
I answer myself: Yes
Definitely “all of the above”.
AND Coal finally said NO to Odin!
Coal I’m so proud of you
Coal I’m so afraid for you 🙁

Oh odin you rather stupid and greedy idiot.
You never get someone to fight more fiercely than with something and someone to protect. Love the angtagonizing your ‘weapon’ approach.
