Lets see, Norsemen fought on the side, so Coal’s village was coastal, thus fishing. Coal was probably a fisherman first and fighter second. Mending sails and nets would be tasks he is just as comfortable at as fighting.
I’m constantly in love with how you draw folds in cloth. Especially when I look back at how far you’ve come in art style and technique since the beginning of the comic!
It’s also fun seeing how you manage to draw Coal’s hair in the exact same shape regardless of what angle we’re viewing him from. 😁

Even better, fighting Norsemen mostly were aboard, so mending sails should be a skill of him in any case.
