I love the way each person’s interaction with the fence says something about their personality:
Coal: Instantly leaps over it to rescue Hedda from (perceived) danger.
Arne: Perches on top of it and waves enthusiastically.
Ibrahim: Examines its composition and method of construction.
No doubt when Loki shows up he will good-naturedly endure the fence’s many quirks, while gently encouraging it to follow a course that happens to coincide with his goals.
Haha! In my thumbnails I drew long ago I drew the fence as a regular wood fence and then, when I went to actually draw the page, I remembered….they didn’t have a lot of wood! A quick search later and “oh yeah I guess they’d just use dirt for fences” was born.
So like…let’s be real…Ibrahim exists to point out niche historical research that was very interesting but wound up irrelevant to the plot, right? Because that happens to me ALL THE TIME
I wish I could admit to being that insightful but they were both discovered and decided on while I was sketching each page, lolol. Truly a matter of Thumbnail-Sarah giving Page-Sketch-Sarah more work…….
But thumbnails are supposed to leave most of the work to be done later. This is fundamental to the idea of thumbnails. Otherwise, you’d just be doing the whole comic twice, which would be kind of silly.

Don’t forget that Hedda was also hiding behind it to begin with.
Haha. Yes, I suppose she was.

All this to say Ibrahim is a huge dork.
Ibrahim’s confusion brings me clarity. I thought it was a hedge. Also Arne’s excitement is endearing and infectious.

Arne in the last panel: Me irl with cheese on toast (or anything else that I didn’t have to cook).
Cheese on toast? [*Kermit arms*] A FEAST!
That is my favorite drawing I’ve ever done.
Ibrahim, asking the important questions
Got to know the best ways to use dirt.
A feast is not truly a feast without music and stories.
and roas t Lam b ! Naa aaah! Naa aaah!
There will be plenty of those!
Around 3:00AM, Ibrahim will commence to recite (from memory) the entire Illiad, or 1001Nights, or Kitab-Al-RomanContractLaw… (vol 1 thru 23)
… The Audience will be entirely SILENT, Rapt attention… and SNORING!
